The first references or beehives date from 1500. There are 26 references in which quotations on beehives or apiaries appear.
In the ordinances, beekeeping is regulated in several respects: the right to harvest, control on the exploitation of beeswax and honey and new settlements.
There are currently between 18,000 and 20,000 beehives on the islands and they produce around 220 tons of honey, which is sold, in its totality, on the local market. The Canarian honeys are a singular and specific product thanks to the particularities of the flora of the archipelago which boasts of many endemic species. This gives the honey unique flavours impossible to find anywhere else in the world.
